Developing our independent working skills...
|
This is a vital skill for everyone. We look at what we have achieved, and what we need to do next to improve. We set targets for ourselves and organise our own work. Talented pupils are very insightful and determined in this. They know what they want to achieve and they will do it. |

Year 6 Crucial Crew Trip
On Tuesday 28th April our year 6 pupils attended Crucial Crew. This trip is specifically aimed at year 6’s, they partake in interactive, informative presentations with local agencies and services they may come across in real life such as Police Officers, Fire Officers, Paramedics and School Nurses. Crucial Crew gives the children the chance to experience ‘hands on’ potentially dangerous situations in a safe and supervised environment.
The aim of the trip is to get pupils thinking about their own safety and making sure they have the skills to deal with an emergency should it ever arise. They covered subjects such as Road Safety, Bullying, Drugs and Alcohol and Safety at Home.
Pupils' thoughts on the trip;
“I thought Crucial Crew was fun and I learnt a lot about the dangers of farms and much more. Now that I have been to Crucial Crew I know how to look after myself and other people.” Jennifer
“ I thought Crucial Crew was very fun and I now know more dangers of farms, alcohol, drugs and much more.” Cameron

Helping our children to read independently with Rapid Read
Rapid Read is a motivational reading support programme that uses a collection of resources to help enhance pupils reading ability. Currently a selection of pupils across year groups 3, 4, 5 and 6 are working on the scheme alongside their home/school reading books. Rapid is divided up into three different methods for learning:
*Books- the books are banded into levels which we work through, each book contains questions at the end of the story to test our recall, spelling and phonic skills.
*Computer- the computer can read to us, and we can read to the computer! What we read is recorded so we can listen back and our teachers can monitor our progress. As well as reading stories we can earn power points by completing quizzes.
*Worksheets- the worksheets help us practice not only our reading skills but also our spelling and handwriting skills.

Pupils in White Tigers Class are extending their independent working skills in science by planning and investigating to widen their scientific knowledge! The children have been planning their own investigations, thinking about variables, estimating/predicting and fair testing and then carrying out practical experiments to test their theories.
This term we have been looking at Life Processes - we have already made a model of the heart out of plastic bottles, straws and balloons, to demonstrate the hearts' pumping motion of blood round our bodies. We have also been looking at plants and the way in which they gain their nutrients through their roots and leaves. We’re going to be carrying out an experiment with dye to trace how a plant deliveries nutrients from its roots to the rest of the plant body- keep an eye out for pictures of what we discover doing this experiment coming soon!
