Developing our verbal and language skills ...

We learn to delve into the ideas of others and communicate our own thoughts through speaking and listening, reading and writing.  Children use drama and discussion, and read intriguing and informative texts.  We write for many different purposes, and include lots of computer based tasks.  Gifted children learn to explore more challenging ideas, and to produce more complex written and electronic documents.

A Fairytale Poem

 by Amy, Year 1

Here come the Wicked Witches,

Here come the Wicked Witches flying in the air.

Here come the Three Little Pigs from the Fairy Land,

Here comes the Wolf from the dirty ditches.

Here come the giants eating and chomping everywhere,

Here comes Cinderella with a missing shoe and prince.

Caribbean Poem

by The White Tiger Class

The cool water shimmers in the hot, sparkling sun, boiling on the orange sand, children splashing and adults reading,

Soft and sparkling, shiny sand tickling my feet,

Flaming sun sparkles down on the lazy tropical blue sea,

The orange, yellow, red and green colour of the juicy fruits waiting to be eaten,

Markets flooding with splashes of colour,

The sizzling, brilliant beach heats up your feet, shade under the tall spiky palm trees from the hot, golden, glazing sun,

Sun in the sky is like one thousand golden coins, shining on the bustling markets below,

The crystal sea sways to the rhythm of the tropical trees,

Luxurious beaches, with golden sand, splashed and flashing with colour,

Extended, golden beaches splashed with palm trees and lazy hammocks,

Here is the sea lying and bathing in the sun,

The azure sea glistens like a jewel at night,

Beautiful beaches and the summer sun, gleaming onto the golden grains of sand,

The hot sun shines down on the market, scalding the fruit,

The shining sun blazing down on the rippling sea,

Gentle waves lapping; lovely, warm sun and cooling breeze; you are in the Caribbean.

Poem Inspired by World Book Day

by the children of Blue Whale and Red Kite Classes

Caribbean, African, Castles and Elves

You can find amazing books

On our wooden shelves

Castles, castles

Big and small

Castles, castles

Strong and tall

Castles, castles

Who lives there?

Castles, castles

You should beware!

Caribbean, African, Castles and Elves

You can find amazing books

On our wooden shelves

There could be a giant

Or maybe a wizard

Be careful entering

You could be changed into a lizard!

Caribbean, African, Castles and Elves

You can find amazing books

On our wooden shelves

Energetic elves

Make shiny shoes

It shocks and surprises the shoemaker

Excited elves with their gifts.

Caribbean, African, Castles and Elves

You can find amazing books

On our wooden shelves

Boiling hot, dry and level

Vast continent from Cairo to Cape Town

Home to the lions, zebras too

Fat hippos wallowing in the mud.

Caribbean, African, Castles and Elves

You can find amazing books

On our wooden shelves

Talk Partners: during lessons we have talk partners; this allows us to discuss our ideas and opinions on whatever we are working on. By doing this we take into account not only our thoughts, but other people's too and can expand on things we come up with by talking together.

Our Red Kite class wrote these atmospheric story openers.

The undisturbed graveyard was hush and terrifying as I walked, slowly and shivering, through the old black gate.  When I was through into the grave yard the rusty gate creaked shut, and I could smell the crumbling graves.  They felt cold, rough and damp.  The rustling trees swayed in the foggy sky…

Katy

I sprinted through the gate.  When I got in there it was damp and muddy.  The sky was grey and stormy.  It was sad.  Suddenly a dog jumped out at me.  It was calm and brave, but it had been attacked badly and I ran and hugged it.

These reports from White Tiger class explain how our project developed.

Last Wednesday Miss Cartwright announced to the class that the Parish Council had asked us to come up with ideas for the next village plan.  So we walked around the village and took pictures of what we liked and disliked.  We looked at the pictures and made mind maps of the things we liked and thought could be improved.  Then we made some questions from our mind maps and wrote them down in our jotters.

The next day we typed up our questions on the laptops.  Later that day we thought about the introduction we could give the visitors from the Parish Council to show them what we had been doing.  We did this in groups and then showed them to the rest of the class and Miss Cartwright.  My group won so we stayed in at play and made some changes to make it even better.  The following afternoon we all practiced our questions or introduction and two people chose to video the visit.  The visit was very successful and we got a lot of information from the two visitors.

One day Miss Cartwright announced to us that we were going to help the Parish Council.

First we went around the village taking pictures of the things we liked and disliked.  We got a lot of information from doing this.  Next we created a mind map on the ‘new’ laptops.  Then we thought of questions to ask the Parish Council and the best ones were chosen to be asked.  Then we had to decide on an introduction and my group were chosen.  Duncan and Talia were chosen to film the meeting with our ‘new’ cameras (lots of new things!).  Everyone else was given questions to ask the Parish Council.  Then we rehearsed for the meeting and headed off to the ICT Suite.  We started off with the intro.  The only problem we had was that the cameras kept running out of battery.

After the meeting we made a questionnaire and distributed it around the village, and now finally it is coming to an end and I am writing a report about the excitement of it all.  It has been fun, but all good things must end!
